Bernice "Bernie" Deem, Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) is the owner and president of DeemHR, a regional management consulting firm specializing in human resources. Prior to opening her company in 1999, Bernie had 20 years of hands on experience in HR, culminating as the Senior Executive of Human Resources for One Valley Bank and Bancorp (now BB&T).

Matt McMillion, a Charleston, West Virginia area native, joined DeemHR in an adjunct capacity the spring of 2013. Matt brings a unique perspective to human resources due to his varied HR responsibilities for industries including: a large pharmacy chain, a defense litigation firm, a premier all-suite hotel and now as the Director of Human Resources for a large local non-profit.
Matt is serving his second term as the Charleston SHRM Chapter Board of Director's College Relations Chair, working with college students who are tomorrow's generation of HR leaders.
He serves on several non-profit HR committees including the Covenant House and the Childhood Language Center.
Using new ways of thinking to overcome today's HR challenges, Matt's experience coupled with a master's degree in human resources management, makes him a valuable part of the DeemHR team.
Debbie Varney is a Senior Consultant at DeemHR. She is a seasoned HR professional in benefits, compensation, HRIS, training, payroll, employment and dealing with difficult situations. She is effective in systems management and administration and has great problem solving skills.
She started as a teller and worked all positions within the branch banking system, leaving as a branch manager to begin her Human Resources career.
In addition, she leads stress reduction classes, develops certification programs, behavioral change workshops and facilitates coaching for professionals.
Debbie is efficient, effective and driven, with a natural inclination to do great work in a minimal amount of time. She is a social intuitive, effective communicator, a natural promoter of great ideas and great people.
